At Home Care Encourages Senior Heart Health Awareness in Shelton, CT

There is very little that has not been said a million times about heart disease. The problem is that in this day and age, you never know who to trust. There is simply too much contradictory information out there. Thankfully, proper at home care professionals are there to help your loved one get through all the challenges of old age, including heart disease.

As February is American Heart Health Month we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to take a closer look at and raise awareness about heart disease and how at home care can help prevent it.

What is Heart Disease?

What makes heart disease so important to talk about is actually not something very positive. There is overwhelming evidence that heart disease is actually the leading cause of death amongst both men and women in America.

You may already know that heart disease is actually an umbrella term. It includes more than one condition. Some of the most well known are congestive heart failure, heart attack, arrhythmia and ischemia. 

What Causes It?

In the most literal of terms, heart disease is caused by plaque build-up on artery walls which in turn makes them become narrower and blocked. In the wider sense, it is actually the result of poor lifestyle choices like unhealthy eating, smoking, obesity, and lack of exercise.

Does It Have Any Symptoms?

Yes - A number of conditions fall within the heart disease spectrum and they all require different treatment, but they all have the same symptoms. The most common is chest pain, pressure or discomfort. Other include an irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, heart palpitations or general weakness, dizziness, nausea, and sweating.

Is It Preventable?

Absolutely! The good news is that there is so much you can do to help your loved one prevent heart disease. Making sure they are making all doctors appointments is a start. Next, they will need to go on a healthy diet and begin exercising on a regular basis.

This February, talk to your loved one about heart disease. Starting early can make all the difference and they will thank you for it.
